Winter Fence Preparations

Whether we like it or not, cold weather is on its way. Snow, ice, high winds and freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on your outdoor areas. Winter weather can be especially harmful to your fence. Taking the time now to prepare for winter can protect your fence and avoid costly repairs later.

Your fence will be left out in the cold for months to bear the elements. In Pennsylvania, we experience harsh winter weather frequently from November through March. That’s five months of Mother Nature impacting your fence.

Prepare now by taking a few steps this weekend. Start by removing dirt, leaves, and other debris around and between fence posts. Removing debris will allow air to flow through, minimizing mold and mildew growth. Moisture and debris can cause harm on all types of fence.

Clean the fence to kill any existing mold and mildew. If you are not sure what type of cleaner to use, please contact us for info. Rinse with water once mold and mildew have vanished.

Trim any tree branches that hang low over the fence. Buildup of snow and ice could cause branches to break and fall, damaging the fence.

The frosting and thawing that occurs in winter can cause soil to shift. This can make fence posts shift.  Monitor any soil changes and if your fence posts are affected, make repairs quickly.
