An arbor is a vertical structure used in landscaping to provide shelter, privacy, shade and serve as a garden accent. Arbors can be constructed to blend into the current landscape to separate different areas of a garden or yard. Arbors are often also used to enhance a walkway or path and may feature a gate as well as benches. An arbor can be constructed and attached to a fence, although they are generally freestanding.

A pergola is like an outdoor room. Where an arbor is more like an outdoor doorway or arch to walk through, a pergola covers a much larger space. Pergolas create a shaded seating area and are constructed of vertical posts or pillars to support crossbeams that feature open lattice or additional beams. Some pergola owners opt to allow vines to grown on their pergolas to create more shade and visual interest.
